Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City (10-4-3, 33 points) will play for their fourth straight road victory on Saturday when they visit the fourth-placed Colorado Rapids (8-4-3, 27 points) Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT and fans can catch the action live on Bally Sports Kansas City Plus, Bally Sports Midwest Plus, BallySports.com, the Bally Sports app, Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Large 1340 AM.
Sporting claimed another away victory on Wednesday, hammering LAFC 4-1 to supplant Seattle Sounders FC for the top spot in the West. The Rapids, meanwhile, are fully rested after securing their own road victory last Saturday against Austin FC and are just six points behind Sporting with two games down.
As the excitement builds towards Saturday’s high-stakes showdown, we visit five compelling storylines surrounding the game in the space below.
1. Road warriors
Athletes have quite simply gotten into the habit of winning away from home. Alan Pulido, Luis Martins, Daniel Salloi and Gadi Kinda all found the back of the net during LAFC’s teardown on Wednesday, giving manager Peter Vermes’ men their fifth road victory at the top of the 2021 campaign league. Sporting have won three consecutive road games in the regular season, tied for the club’s second longest streak since the dawn of Major League Soccer’s no-shootout era in 2000.
Even more impressive? Sporting’s last three road wins have come against three of the four teams just below them in the Western Conference standings: Seattle, second, Galaxy, third and LAFC, fifth. Next up for the Sporting, of course, is a trip to Colorado, fourth.
