Muireann O’Connell says being single in your 30s was “condescending”

Ireland AM’s Muireann O’Connell admitted that it was “really hard” to try to get out in your 30s.

the 37-year-old has been loved for some time now, but said she struggles to enjoy life as a single person as people constantly offer her unsolicited advice.

Earlier today, matchmaker and dating specialist Mairéad Loughman appeared on Ireland AM to discuss dating during the pandemic and how difficult it has been for singles.

Muireann weighed in on the topic and spoke about the frustration she felt when people told her she would find love one day.

“I always remember people telling me, ‘It’ll happen when you least expect it,’ and I thought it was the most condescending thing in the world,” said the Limerick native.

“I was like, ‘Would you stop telling me that thing.’ It can be really hard to know how you are treated when you are single as you get older. Like in your 20s, a lot of your pals are single, but in their 30s …

“The semantics around it and the friends telling you about it can almost break your head more than the actual dating situation,” she added.

In July, Muireann was taken by her mysterious man – whom she affectionately calls her “roommate” – on a romantic trip to Adare Mansion in Limerick.

Taking inspiration from her Instagram stories at the time, she informed her followers of the surprise and wrote, “Driving for the holidays… where? I do not know. The roommate chose a hotel for the night and doesn’t tell me which one. Not great with surprises so I keep asking questions. He won’t answer. Defo won’t speak by the time we get there.

However, the Virgin Media star was then inundated with messages asking if the couple had gotten engaged and needed to set the record straight.

“I am NOT engaged. Especially with the half-scraped shellac… Very prepared for the holidays, ”she said, raising her hand without the ring.
