University Credit Union to match Ending Hunger donations through December 31
ORONO – For the fourth year in a row, University Credit Union matches giving to help end hunger in Maine. Donations made online or in person at any UCU site between November 15 and December 31 will be matched and donated, up to a total of $ 25,000 in 2021. Anyone can participate in the UCU Ending Campaign Hunger and see his gift matched; membership in a credit union is not required.
Donations made through UCU will go to the Maine Credit Unions Campaign to End Hunger and provide essential additional funding for local food aid programs, which have seen increased demand during the pandemic. of COVID-19. This includes community programs, such as local and regional food banks and pantries, as well as college programs on campuses throughout the University of Maine system.
As a state with a large seasonal economy already negatively impacted by COVID-19, Maine regularly sees an increase in demand for food aid during the cold months. According to Feeding America, more than 166,000 Mainers go hungry and of these, more than 44,000 are children. Additionally, recent research published by the University of Maine, Husson University and the Maine Campus Compact found severe food insecurity among Maine students in 2018, with 69% of students surveyed saying they had encountered issues such as an inability to eat balanced meals, worrying about not having enough money for food, skipping meals, not having access to fresh produce, skipping meals to feed someone else and not not eat for one to two days.
“Access to nutritious and adequate food is essential to personal health and well-being,” said UCU President and CEO Renée Ouellette. “As a member-owned financial institution, our priority is to help Mainers improve their financial well-being every day – and it starts with food. By donating by December 31, donors can double their impact on the fight against hunger and on the lives of Mainers in need.
