Women’s football seeks to build on victory over NDC

Wheeling, W. Va- After a wild win last time around, the Wheeling University women’s soccer team (2-3, 1-2) is back on the road when they face Alderson Broaddus on Sunday at 2 pm. Wheeling earned their first victory in the last 16 downs against the Falcons last time around and is hoping that momentum will follow them to Philippi, West Virginia.

The last time the women’s soccer team entered the field was at home against Notre Dame College on Wednesday night. Prior to this game, the Cardinals had never beaten Notre Dame College and were on a 16-game losing streak against the Falcons. They ended the streak in a row with the final score being 3-2.

In the first 17 minutes, both teams jumped onto the chessboard twice, and for a good majority of the game the score was 2-2. Then in the 76th minute, Wheeling managed to score the goal they needed with a corner kick from the far corner of the end zone. Senior Lainey Brown took the corner kick and hit the ball to the senior Kenadee Burgoyne as the ball bounced off his body and moved toward midfield. First-year student Talynn De Bartolo was perfectly positioned, and once the ball arrived, she released her shot, hitting it over the Notre Dame goalkeeper. The goal gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead, and for the final 14 minutes of the game, Wheeling held onto the ball and claimed the first victory over Notre Dame College. The victory was also MEC’s ​​first victory since the spring season against Frostburg State College.

Wheeling now sits fifth in MEC’s ​​North Division and is only one game away from Notre Dame College for fourth place. They face a team of Alderson Broaddus who are just below them in the standings at 0-4 in the MEC game and hope to gain the advantage over them and continue their rise in the standings.

The match-up

The Cardinals and Battlers have a history dating back to 2008. They have faced each other six times, with the Battlers winning five of those games. The last clash with Alderson Broaddus was in the fall of 2019, and the Cardinals failed, losing 5-1. Their only victory against the Battlers came in the first game between the two teams in September 2008, when Wheeling won 7-0 at Philippi.

In the last game, the Battlers got the better of Wheeling, allowing just one first-half goal in the team’s 5-1 loss. Cardinal’s only goal was scored by Kenadee Burgoyne in the 27th minute. She scored on an assist from the former Cardinal Kendra benzel. Alderson Broaddus would go on to score four unanswered goals after that and had the momentum on their side for the remainder of the game.
